The Punkjazz Group - Y Not (1979)

Sin información y sin mucho que agregar. Freepunk, punkjazz de la Alemania de fines de los 70.

Pero quien me lo pasó si tiene algo para agregar, extraído de punkfreejazzdub:

Alfred 23 Harth estuvo en Chile junto a Heiner Goebbels por ahí por 1985, tocando en el Goethe Institut. Tenía la copia en caset de su presentación pero en un año en que me cambié varias veces de casa, la perdí.

Juntos venían tocando como dúo en Alemania, pero además integraban la banda Cassiber, junto a su compatriota Cristoph Anders, y al inglés Chris Cutler en batería. Según le leí a Cutler, cuando existía la organización Rock In Opposition (creada hacia 1978 por media docena de bandas europeas), los italianos de Stormy Six conocieron a Goebbels/Harth en un festival. Le enviaron una cinta a Chris, que a su vez les envió una carta señalando que el material era fantástico, pero que no podía soportar los ritmos programados, así que se ofrecía como baterista. Lo cual fue aceptado, y así surgió Cassiber, que a través de cuatro discos de estudio (Man or monkey, Beauty and the beast, Perfect worlds y A face we all know) fueron de los mejores exponentes del RIO, con su inusual mezcla de estructura e improvisación electroacústica. En medio de su alta intensidad se las arreglaban para pasar desde citas saxofonísticas a Albert Ayler, a un hermoso cover de “At last I am free” de Chic.

Alguna vez leí que estos dos alemanes (Alfred y Heiner) habían estado también en un proyecto callejero llamado Sogenannten Linksradikalen Blasorchesters. Inspirados en Eisler, Brecht, Nino Rota, Zappa e incluso el folklore chileno, hicieron dos albums, que nunca he podido conseguir: Hört, hört (1977) y  Mit gelben Birnen (1980) disolviéndose en 1981.   

Alguien que los vio tocar en Chile me contó que antes de empezar Harth se comió un sánguche enorme, mientras Goebbels daba rienda suelta sin mayor pudor a un repentino e intenso romance con una joven rubia de aspecto ABC1, a un costado del escenario. "Les faltó poco para ponerse a follar ahí mismo" decía, muerto de la risa.

No sé mucho más de las andanzas de estos talentos musicales, pero A23H ha estado subiendo materiales de su archivo a bandcamp. Ahí me encontré con “Y NOT” de su Punkjazz Group, en que participaba también el futuro Cassiber Cristoph Anders, grabado en 1979 en el legendario Bunker Bornheim en Frankfurt del Meno.

No sé si Y NOT (Por qué no) tiene algo que ver con el album Y del Pop Group, del mismo año. De todos modos, ambos discos son grandes referentes para quienes creemos en esta estética (o sea, yo y 3 o 4 amigxs más).

Barrera - Visiones Nocturnas (2021)

Sei Still - El Refugio (2021)

«The follow-up to their 2020 self-titled debut album marks a number of changes for the band. Not only have they upped sticks and moved from Mexico City to Berlin, but their sound has undergone a process of evolution too. Where the debut LP was an exercise in mesmerising Krautrock channeling the likes of Neu! and Can, ‘El Refugio’ keeps hold of that motorik pulse but trades the debut’s more expansive and hypnotic tendencies for a collection of dark, wiry post-punk vignettes. The album is a more skeletal effort than its predecessor but packs a greater punch precisely because of that; the songs are shorter and unapologetically to-the-point, brimming with a tension and anguish that makes ‘El Refugio’ a deeply affecting listen. “The biggest influence on this record was the fact that our personal lives had a radical change and we felt the need to do something different, to dig deeper into the possibilities of what the band was about. We never wanted to make the same record twice. The songs allude to childhood, dreams, desire, loneliness, paranoia and hope. A longing for a different reality that breaks the monotony of daily life."

‘El Refugio’ is still driven by the taut, propulsive rhythm sections of their earlier work – see the driving motorik post-punk of ‘Extrarradio’, ‘Me Persigue’ and ‘Exilio’, or the death disco grooves of ‘Solsticio’ – but the surrounding instrumentation owes far more to 70s punk and new wave than any kosmische travellers. Whilst melodic bass lines propel the music in a perpetual forward motion, guitars flicker from angular and razor-sharp to shimmering and forlorn, peppered by the ambient whirr of synths that oscillate subtly in the background throughout. All the while Lucas Martín’s monotonous sprechgesang vocal (delivered in Spanish throughout) give the tracks a foreboding and ghostly allure. The band still have their hypnotic moments, mind.»
